The Roman Ruins of São Cucufate, located in Vila de Frades, in the municipality of Vidigueira, won on August 29th the victory in the Historical Heritage category of the New 7 Wonders of Portugal. The decision was announced during the last regional final dedicated to the Alentejo and Ribatejo regions, held at the Jardim das Portas do Sol, in Santarém. With this result, the archaeological site guaranteed a place in the national semi-final of the competition.
The São Cucufate complex will now represent the Alentejo region in the national semi-final, scheduled for next Saturday, September 5th, in Sintra. This recognition highlights one of the most important testimonies of Roman presence in the Alentejo territory and gives new prominence to a heritage that spans almost two thousand years of history.
The archaeological complex originated in the 1st century AD, when it functioned as an agricultural exploitation intended to take advantage of the region's potential. Over the centuries, the villa grew and acquired an increasingly monumental dimension. It was especially in the 4th century that São Cucufate reached its greatest period of splendor, transforming into a luxurious villa with baths and gardens.
After nearly two thousand years of history, the Roman ruins of Vila de Frades are now preparing to compete on a national stage, vying for a place in the next phase of this Portuguese heritage competition.
As Ruínas Romanas de São Cucufate, em Vila de Frades, no concelho da Vidigueira, conquistaram este sábado, 29 de agosto, a vitória na categoria de Património Histórico das Novas 7 Maravilhas de Portugal, garantindo um lugar na meia-final nacional da competição.
A decisão foi conhecida durante a última final regional dedicada ao Alentejo e Ribatejo, realizada no Jardim das Portas do Sol, em Santarém. Com este resultado, São Cucufate vai agora representar a região na meia-final nacional, marcada para o próximo sábado, 5 de setembro, em Sintra.
O reconhecimento coloca em destaque um dos mais importantes testemunhos da presença romana no território alentejano e dá nova projeção a um património que atravessa quase dois mil anos de história.
O complexo arqueológico de São Cucufate teve origem no século I d.C., quando funcionava como uma exploração agrícola destinada ao aproveitamento das potencialidades da região. Ao longo dos séculos, a villa foi crescendo e adquirindo uma dimensão cada vez mais monumental.
Foi sobretudo no século IV que São Cucufate atingiu o seu período de maior esplendor, transformando-se numa luxuosa villa áulica, dotada de termas e jardins.
A vitória na final regional representa agora uma nova etapa para São Cucufate. No próximo sábado, em Sintra, as ruínas romanas de Vila de Frades estarão entre os patrimónios que vão disputar um lugar na fase seguinte das Novas 7 Maravilhas de Portugal.
Depois de quase dois mil anos de história, São Cucufate prepara-se para voltar a fazer história, desta vez num palco nacional.
