Enric Mas, rider from the Movistar team, became the new leader of the Vuelta a España after Saturday's stage. The 25-year-old young Spaniard overtook Pogacar in the general classification and took the lead of the race.
At the podium climb, Mas refused to wear the red leader's jersey, which had belonged to Tadej Pogacar. The gesture was interpreted as a sign of respect for the Slovenian rider, who fell from the lead after that stage.
Pogacar, who had won the Vuelta in 2019 and 2021, finished the stage in second place, behind Mas. The change in positions on the general classification marked a significant shift in the Spanish race.
The episode of the refused jersey became one of the most discussed moments of the Vuelta, demonstrating the mutual respect between the two cyclists despite the competition for the race lead.
