Bernard Felix Xavier: the Portuguese spear in the Allied secret war in the Indo-Pacific

Bernard Felix Xavier was a Portuguese man from Hong Kong who, during World War II, went from being a signalman in the Royal Navy defending Hong Kong to a clandestine agent in the service of the United States, infiltrating Japanese networks in Macau to feed false intelligence to the enemy. After the fall of Hong Kong in December 1941, he escaped to free China and joined the British Army Aid Group, coordinating intelligence operations with figures such as Jack Braga, Charles Boxer and Sir Lindsay Ride. His Portuguese origin proved a strategic advantage, allowing him to move around Macau with less suspicion than British or American officers. His mission contributed to Allied air attacks on Japanese ships. After the war, he emigrated to Britain in 1950, living a discreet life, while other companions such as Ride and Boxer received greater public recognition. The article argues that his story deserves to be recognized as a moral heritage of freedom and an example of the Portuguese contribution to Allied victory.
