Here next door, Granada records 1,279 earthquakes in two weeks after magnitude 5 tremor

Granada recorded 1,279 earthquakes since the magnitude 5 tremor on August 15 in Alhendín, which caused alarm among the population and the first damage to homes in the metropolitan area. The earthquake that marked the beginning of the current seismic series occurred after four other tremors on the southern slope of the Vega de Granada. Most of the recorded tremors were of low magnitude, with about a dozen exceeding magnitude 3.

The Spanish National Geographic Institute detected a decrease in seismic activity over this week, although tremors continue. On Thursday, 40 earthquakes above magnitude 2 were recorded, eight of which were felt by the population, and on Friday, August 28, activity dropped to eight occurrences. In the previous week, the Vega de Granada was hit by a magnitude 4.8 earthquake with its epicenter in Gójar, followed by three tremors of magnitudes 4.2, 4.0 and 3.9, which caused numerous damages and alert calls from all provinces in southern Spain.

Over the 15 days of seismic activity, the municipal councils of Vega de Granada reinforced technical inspections to assess damages and approved bonuses and support for affected people. The Insurance Compensation Consortium received more than 27,500 claims related to the seismic series, of which about 95% concern housing damage. The organization anticipates the number of claims could reach 60,000, as approximately two thousand reports are still being submitted daily.

The Spanish central government estimates that the damages caused by the seismic series could reach 100 million euros. However, the definitive assessment will take approximately three months, the period deemed necessary to complete the reports on the losses caused by the successive earthquakes.
