The death toll in Nepal after heavy rains and floods has risen to 626, according to a Reuters update. The government estimates it will cost between $4 and $5 billion to rebuild the destroyed areas.
The country requested international assistance for specialized rescues in tunnels, body identification, and infrastructure recovery. For now, Nepal says it is capable of handling general search and rescue operations on its own.
The government requested international support in areas where the country lacks sufficient technical expertise. These include rescuing people trapped in hydropower plant tunnels, restoring communication and transport, as well as body identification.
The collapse of a glacier on Wednesday (26) released a large amount of rocks, ice, mud, and debris through the Himalayan river systems, causing the flood in the border region with China.
