Former Ecuadorian President Lenin Moreno was sentenced to five years in prison for corruption. Moreno governed the country between 2017 and 2021.

The conviction relates to the acceptance of bribes from a Chinese state-owned company. In exchange, Moreno allegedly granted a contract for the construction of a hydroelectric power plant.

This sentence represents one of the most significant corruption cases against a former Ecuadorian head of state.
