Government reduces fuel discount because product price "will drop"

The Portuguese Government will reduce the discount on the Excise Duty on Petroleum Products (ISP) from August 31, decreasing the fiscal support for fuels due to the expected drop in pump prices. For diesel, the benefit goes from 81.63 euros to 71.63 euros per 1,000 liters, while unleaded gasoline drops from 53.98 euros to 51.62 euros. The Executive justifies the measure with the expected decline in wholesale prices, contradicting the predictions of the Automobile Club of Portugal, which estimated a drop of 7.5 cents in diesel but an increase of 1.5 cents in gasoline. The fiscal compensation mechanism was created to neutralize extraordinary VAT gains when quotations are at least ten cents above the March reference.

Home mortgage payment makes biggest jump in three years in September

The war in Iran led the European Central Bank to raise interest rates to contain inflation, and in September the house payment will register the biggest increase in three years. Euribor rates have accelerated again due to the escalation of tensions between the USA and Iran, with the ECB projecting a new 25 basis point rise. For a 150,000 euro mortgage over 30 years, the payment could increase by between 23 euros (3-month Euribor) and 70 euros (12-month Euribor), significantly worsening Portuguese family budgets.
