Electric scooters have become a "target to take down" in Portuguese municipalities, according to urban planner Frederico Moura e Sá. Several municipalities have been phasing out this type of shared vehicle, although sector companies have adapted their business models to the rules imposed by local authorities.
Frederico Moura e Sá told the Lusil news agency that Portugal still has a "deeply motorized urban environment," where the "city model" remains unchanged. This reality means that scooters are seen as a target to take down by local decision-makers.
The urban planner argues that the real challenge is not about discussing scooters in isolation, but rather reflecting on what kind of public space exists in Portuguese cities. In his view, it is necessary to look at mobility in an integrated and not sectoral way.
