António José Seguro promulgates ban on smartphones in schools until 9th grade

SOL28 August 2026 at 19:15

The President of the Republic, António José Seguro, promulgated a law that prohibits the use of mobile phones in schools until the 9th year of schooling. The measure, which now covers the 3rd cycle of basic education, will come into force from January 1, 2027. This decision represents an extension of a ban that already existed for the previous years.

The promulgated law also includes new rules aimed at combating the lack of teachers in Portuguese schools. The measures aim to facilitate the hiring process for graduates for the teaching career, thus responding to one of the main difficulties faced by the national educational system.

With this promulgation, António José Seguro gives the green light to both measures, which had previously been approved by parliament. The President of the Republic decided not to veto the law, following the usual procedure for promulgating legislation that it considers appropriate to the country's needs.
