Church/AI: Chaplain from Coimbra rejects 'false idea of progress' in the face of unregulated technological advancement

The chaplain of the University of Coimbra, Father Nuno Fileno, warned about the risks of delegating moral decisions to artificial intelligence, denouncing the impact of technical evolution devoid of ethical limits. In an interview with ECCLESIA Agency, the head of the University Pastoral Care warned that "the danger is that the speed of technique exceeds that of dignity," which generates a "false idea of progress," because progress cannot be merely technical.

The priest evoked the Christian vision of vulnerability, emphasizing that the ambition to eradicate suffering through technology would result in the simultaneous elimination of the capacity to love. Referencing Pope Leo XIV's encyclical "Magnifica Humanitas," published on May 25, Father Nuno Fileno criticized the promises of transhumanism and warned that "the greatest misunderstanding is equating artificial intelligence with human intelligence," since, although more efficient and faster, AI lacks

The chaplain of the University of Coimbra, Father Nuno Fileno, warned of the dangers of technological evolution devoid of ethical limits, rejecting the idea that progress is limited to technique alone. In an interview with Ecclesia Agency, he argued that delegating moral decisions to artificial intelligence represents a serious risk, as the speed of technique surpasses that of human dignity. The priest criticized transhumanism, arguing that the attempt to totally eliminate suffering would result in the simultaneous elimination of desire and love. He also warned about the concentration of power in algorithms, the "hidden face" of the digital transition, and the exploitation of natural resources and labor, arguing that AI regulation cannot be restricted to its creators.
