The former president of Ecuador, Lenin Moreno, was sentenced to five years in prison for corruption crimes. The sentence was handed down by Ecuadorian justice.
Moreno was found guilty of having accepted bribes from a Chinese state-owned company. The illegal money was received in exchange for granting a contract for the construction of a hydroelectric power plant in Ecuador.
The case involved bribes that were paid during Moreno's term as president of the country, between 2017 and 2021. The investigations revealed the corruption scheme related to the energy infrastructure project.
