Bulgarian businessman Emilian Gebrev became a target of Russian intelligence services after declaring that weapons were going to Thailand, when the real destination was Ukraine and, previously, Georgia, during critical moments of the Russian invasion. The challenge to Moscow's military monopoly put Gebrev in the crosshairs of Kremlin intelligence.
Gebrev survived two poisonings with chemical agents over more than a decade. In addition to the attacks with toxic substances, his factories and ammunition depots were targeted by explosions during the same period.
Gebrev's case exposed a secret network of assassins linked to Russia. The attempts to silence the businessman, combining chemical poisonings and infrastructure attacks, revealed the methods used by Russian services to eliminate threats to Moscow's interests.
