Marco, a municipality of about 26 thousand inhabitants located 220 km from Fortaleza, consolidated the furniture industry as the main local economic activity. In 2023, the Local Productive Arrangement (APL) of furniture brought together 35 formal businesses, responsible for 35% of formal jobs in the municipality, according to data from the Annual List of Social Information (RAIS) of 2021.

The factories in the municipality produce residential furniture and upholstery, serving diverse sectors such as hospitality, restaurants, shopping centers, hospitals, and civil construction. The production supplies buyers from different states of the country, and the dynamics of the furniture hub exceeds the municipal limits, employing workers from neighboring cities and driving an entire chain of suppliers, commerce, and services.

Among the companies in the APL, the Jacaúna Group stands out, with nearly five decades of operation in the sector, more than 30 stores across the country, and investments in process modernization, renewable energy generation, and sustainable raw material production. The group leads about 1,800 employees, demonstrating the significant weight of this company in the economic configuration of the region.

It's Not Enough to Put a Sea View and Call It an Experience

A specialist from the European University warns that Portuguese tourism, despite having achieved record numbers, faces the challenge of an increasingly demanding, informed, and less impressionable traveler. Sofia Almeida argues that it is no longer enough to rely on traditional attributes such as beautiful landscapes or well-located hotels — it is necessary to invest in genuine authenticity, visible sustainability, personalization, and technology, including artificial intelligence, without losing the human capital of Portuguese hospitality. The article warns of the risk of complacency and argues that true competitiveness lies in the ability to continuously evolve and surprise the visitor.
