El Periódico Mediterráneo - General28 August 2026 at 22:18

The Spanish basketball team suffered a home defeat 89-95 against Portugal, marking their second consecutive loss in the qualifiers for the 2027 World Cup, which will be held in Qatar. The result represents a major setback for the host team, which failed to get back on the winning track.

Portugal surprised with a clearly superior physical level compared to Spain throughout the match. The Portuguese players dominated both on the perimeter and in the paint, sustaining their victory with standout performances from four athletes: Travante Williams with 22 points, Diogo Ventura with 19, Neemias Queta with 16, and Ruben Prey with 15.

On the Spanish side, Darío Brizuela was the leading scorer with 19 points, well supported by Álvaro Cárdenas with 18 and Joel Parra with 17. However, the contribution of these players was not enough to avoid the defeat.

Portugal celebrated a deserved victory, consolidating their good form in the World Cup qualifiers, while Spain faces serious difficulties to qualify for the competition taking place in Qatar in 2027.
