Federal Deputy Aécio Neves, national president of the Brazilian Social Democracy Party (PSDB), announced this Friday that he will run for the Senate seat in Minas Gerais. The announcement was made during a press conference at the party headquarters in Belo Horizonte.
At the beginning of the month, Aécio had stated that he would not run in this year's elections, but that this pause in political activity would not be a permanent decision. However, he says he faced pressure from party members and mayors to change his mind.
According to Aécio, after communicating his initial decision to the entire state, he began receiving appeals and requests for reflection asking him to be willing to cooperate and participate in the electoral process, especially in this difficult moment that Minas Gerais is going through.
With this change of position, Aécio joins the "Caring for Minas" coalition, led by the candidate for governor of the state, Alexandre Kalil.
