Translator Fernanda Murad Machado was the winner of the fifth edition of the French Embassy Translation Prize in Brazil, announced this Friday (28th) during a ceremony held at the Machado de Assis Auditorium of the National Library Foundation in Rio de Janeiro. She won first place for translating the book "Njeddo Dewal, Mother of Calamity," originally "Njeddo Dewal: mère de la calamité," by Malian writer, historian, ethnologist, poet, and storyteller Amadou Hampâté Bâ.
As a prize, Fernanda Murad Machado will receive a professional trip to France for editorial meetings, where she will have the opportunity to meet international peers and discuss translation work and the Francophone publishing market.
The book "Njeddo Dewal, Mother of Calamity" was published in Brazil by Hedra Publishing House and is considered one of the most important initiatory tales of the Fula people, diffused across various regions of West Africa.
The fifth edition of the French Embassy Translation Prize aims to give visibility to translators of French in Brazil.
