Analysis: at Unidos da Tijuca, a heated samba competition between the head and the heart

Unidos da Tijuca held this Thursday (27) another stage of the samba-enredo competition for the 2027 carnival, when the Borel school will bring to the Sapucaí the theme "Cabeça do santo." The theme is an adaptation of the bestseller by Ceará writer Socorro Acioli, developed by carnival designer Lucas Milato in his debut at the association, alongside theme developers Leandro Thomaz and Thayssa Menezes.

In a kind of quarterfinals of the contest, five sambas presented themselves on the cold night at the school's rehearsal hall, under the constant scrutiny of president Fernando Horta, who has been in uninterrupted command of the association for 26 years. Horta is directly responsible for three of the four championship trophies that Tijuca possesses (2010, 2012 and 2014).

With a cigar in hand and the lyric notebook always open in front of him on the table, the president evaluated each presentation while the carnival press followed the event in a rare invitation sent by the school. The atmosphere in the rehearsal hall was described as hearts warmed, in contrast to the cold night.

The competition was classified as heated among the competing compositions, reflecting the importance of the samba-enredo for the success of the carnival. The Tijuca's contest is traditionally one of the most competitive in Rio de Janeiro's Special Group, and the choice of theme based on the work of Socorro Acioli promises to be one of the major highlights of upcoming carnivals.
