Kathmandu, August 28, 2026 — A sudden flood of historical proportions hit the Bhotekoshi River valley in northern Nepal, along the border with Tibet, China. The disaster caused hundreds of dead and over a thousand people missing, being considered one of the worst recent natural disasters in the Himalayan region.

The flood directly affected local communities living along the banks of the Bhotekoshi River, both on the Nepalese side and in the Tibet autonomous region. The authorities of both territories are involved in rescue and assistance efforts for the victims.

The phenomenon was described as having historical proportions, suggesting that the meteorological or geological conditions that triggered it were exceptional. Search and rescue operations continue in progress to try to locate the over a thousand missing.

This disaster represents one of the most devastating events in the Himalayan region in recent years, with a significant humanitarian impact for both Nepal and Tibet.
