University of Aveiro coordinates six-million euro European project to combat desertification

Researchers from the Department of Environment and Planning (DAO) and the research units Geobiosciences, Geotechnologies and Geo-engineering (GeoBioTec) and Centre for Environmental and Marine Studies (CESAM) at the University of Aveiro have been coordinating, since June 1, 2024, a European project to assess the potential of innovative solutions to combat desertification. The project, called TERRASAFE, has funding of six million euros.

In close coordination with the European project, the researchers are also coordinating a national project in the same scope. The TERRASAFE theme is described as extremely current, reflecting the growing concern with desertification problems in various regions.

The article indicates that the University of Aveiro plays an international leadership role in research on solutions for this environmental problem, bringing together expertise from various research units to address in an integrated way the challenges posed by desertification.

Investigadores do Departamento de Ambiente e Ordenamento (DAO) e das unidades de investigação Geobiociências, Geotecnologias e Geo-engenharias (GeoBioTec) e Centro de Estudos do Ambiente e do Mar (CESAM) da Universidade de Aveiro (UA) coordenam, desde 1 de junho de 2024, um projeto europeu e, em estreita articulação com este, um projeto nacional para avaliar o potencial de soluções inovadoras para combater a desertificação.
