The satellite images captured this Thursday show the magnitude of the devastation caused in regions of Nepal and Tibet, where a sudden flood caused at least 359 dead and left nearly 1,000 people missing.
According to both governments, the disaster occurred on Wednesday morning due to the collapse of a glacier. The detachment triggered a violent landslide of stones, ice, mud and debris that moved at high speed through the Himalayan river systems.
The flood destroyed numerous villages and important infrastructure along a busy route used by hikers and pilgrims connecting Kathmandu to Lhasa, in Tibet. Among the missing are at least 540 foreign citizens.
The enormous amount of water and sediments accumulated now threatens to trigger a new catastrophe. Nepal's disaster management authority warned about the natural dam formed by the debris blocking the Bhotekoshi River.
