Authorities in Nepal and Tibet are on maximum alert after the discovery of a second dammed lake on Friday, formed from an avalanche that caused flooding on Wednesday. The second body of water was identified in a stretch of the river located below the first lake, which had already been spotted by specialists on Wednesday.
The American television network CNN aired footage recorded by a Chinese rescue team showing the accumulation of muddy water, fed by the runoff from the first lake. Nepal's Disaster Management Authority is responsible for monitoring the second natural reservoir.
The fear of a new flood motivated the suspension of searches by Nepalese and Chinese teams, as well as recommendations for local populations to move to higher areas. Hundreds of those missing were preparing for the pilgrimage ascent of Mount Kailash at the time of the avalanche, which explains the presence of several people in the affected region.
