A Maine Coon kitten named Erebus Anomaly was born with 29 toes and broke a world record for feline polydactyly. He was born in March 2024 in the city of Kaukauna, Wisconsin, with eight toes on one paw and seven on each of the other three. The previous record was held by the kitten Gake, who had 28 toes and held the title since 2002.
The official record certification was granted in May, but Erebus became famous after a report by the American television network ABC News. The feline's story and cuteness spread across social media and TV programs around the world, winning the internet with his unusual characteristic.
Erebus's father was also polydactyl, having six toes on each paw. Polydactyly is a relatively rare genetic condition in cats, but it is not considered harmful to the animals' health.
