Who is Norway's new king? Haakon VIII takes over after death of his father, Harald V, at 89

King Harald V of Norway died on Friday morning (28th) at the age of 89. Harald was Europe's oldest reigning monarch and had been in the position since 1991, totaling 33 years as the country's head of state. With his death, the throne was immediately assumed by his heir, 53-year-old Prince Haakon, who is now King Haakon VIII.

Haakon VIII is the fourth monarch of Norway since the country gained independence from Sweden in 1905. The Norwegian monarchy operates under a constitutional system, with the king performing ceremonial and symbolic duties, as well as representing the country internationally. Actual political power lies with Parliament, which is elected by the population.

With Haakon's ascension to the throne, his eldest daughter, 20-year-old Princess Ingrid Alexandra, becomes the heir apparent and holds the first position in the line of succession. She is the first woman to hold that position in the history of the Norwegian monarchy.
