Have a car? Tax authority issues warning about vehicle tax and reminds you still need to pay it on this date in 2026

Postal do Algarve28 August 2026 at 14:30

The Tax and Customs Authority once again reminded vehicle owners in Portugal that, in 2026, the Single Circulation Tax (IUC) continues to be paid by the end of the month corresponding to the anniversary of the vehicle's registration. This rule applies to cars and motorcycles registered in previous years, with the first year of registration in Portugal requiring payment within 30 days after the legal deadline for vehicle registration expires. The payment document can be obtained through the Finance Portal, where taxpayers can search for "IUC", select the current year filing option and associate the vehicle with their tax identification number.

The new IUC rules take effect from January 1, 2027, but that year will have its own transitional regime. During 2027, those with an annual IUC amount equal to or less than 500 euros must pay the tax in a single installment during October. When the amount exceeds 500 euros, payment will be split into two installments in July and October, although taxpayers may choose to pay the full amount in July.

From 2028, the new model will be fully established, with the registration month no longer determining the annual payment. When the annual amount is equal to or less than 100 euros, the tax will be paid in a single installment in April. For amounts between 100 and 500 euros, there will be two installments in April and October. When the IUC exceeds 500 euros, payment may be split across three dates, in April, July and October, with the option to settle the full amount early by the end of April.

The transitional period in 2027 was created to prevent some owners from having to bear payments for 2026 and 2027 too close together on the calendar. There is also a specific rule for those canceling their registration during 2027: if the cancellation of a vehicle in categories A, B, C, D or E occurs before the anniversary date of its registration, the owner may request the cancellation of the IUC assessment for that year.

Tudo muda no próximo ano

CP bar workers on strike from August 31 for an indefinite period

The workers from Itau, the company that provides the bars and catering service on board CP's Alfa Pendular and Intercidades trains, will begin an indefinite strike starting August 31. The Union of Workers in the Hotel Industry, Tourism, Restaurants and Similar Industries of the South announced the strike in defense of the Company Agreement and against the withdrawal of rights, accusing the company of refusing to comply with the agreement since it took over the concession in April 2025 and of having stopped paying the equivalent of 22 days of meal allowance, causing estimated losses of about 200 euros per worker per month. The union calculates that 18 days of strike have already been carried out in 2025 and demands full compliance with the agreement, restoration of the meal allowance, fair salary increases, and negotiation of a new agreement. The workers also accuse the Government and CP of complicity in the conflict, having refused to meet with union representatives. Protest actions are planned near Santa Apolónia Station in Lisbon on August 31 and near the Secretary of State for Mobility and Transport on September 1.
