Economy Minister warns that Portugal must learn to live with less European funds

Correio da Manhã28 August 2026 at 11:49

The Economy Minister warned that Portugal needs to learn to live with less European funds. The government official made this statement at a time when the country faces a progressive reduction in financial support from the European Union.

The minister described as "a fatality" the fact that Portuguese public investment has been dependent on European funds for many years. This situation has created a structural dependence in the Portuguese economy.

The government official's message comes in the context of new European rules and the reduction of amounts available to Portugal in the next community framework. The Portuguese economy will therefore need to find ways to compensate for this reduction in funding.

The Economy Minister's warning is part of a broader debate about the sustainability of the public investment model in Portugal and the need to diversify the country's sources of financing.
