Meta agreed to pay a $16.68 billion fine and implement fundamental changes to protect young users, as part of a court settlement with US states that sued the company. The settlement was reached in Oakland, California.
The states filing the lawsuit accused Meta of deliberately designing its Facebook and Instagram platforms to be addictive for young users, especially teenagers and children.
This decision is also generating repercussions in Europe, where regulators have been intensifying oversight of social media practices aimed at young audiences and children's digital safety issues.
