China became, for the first time, the main provider of goods to the Spanish economy, surpassing Germany, which was traditionally the main country of origin for Spain's external purchases. This historic change occurred in the first half of 2026, between January and June, when Spanish imports of Chinese goods reached 26,600 million euros, compared to 26,017 million euros acquired from Germany, a difference of almost 600 million euros.
The Asian giant has been progressively increasing its penetration in the Spanish economy, consolidating itself now as Spain's main trading partner regarding the supply of products. This position marks a growing trend of dependence on goods manufactured in China by the Spanish market.
This is not the first time China has overtaken Germany in this ranking. In 2022, during the covid-19 pandemic, the Asian country had already briefly assumed the leadership as the main importing economy, due to the need to acquire masks and other sanitary products during the health crisis.
