Faro leads registration of scams with "fake accidents" and national damage soars

Faro was the district most affected by "fake accident" scams in Portugal, with six occurrences registered in the first half of 2026, in a scheme that caused damages of 72,540 euros across the country. The GNR warned about the growing sophistication of the methods used by the suspects, who simulate non-existent road collisions to pressure victims into paying immediately and gain access to their cards and bank accounts. Drivers over 60 are the main target, exploiting their emotional vulnerability and lesser familiarity with electronic payment methods. Thirty complaints were filed between January and June, 15.4% more than in the same period of 2025, and the GNR predicts that the overall financial impact of 2026 will far exceed the 77,480 euros registered last year.
