Women in Greenland were forced to have intrauterine contraceptive devices (IUDs) placed without their knowledge or consent. These women did not know that the contraceptive device had been placed on them, which represents a serious violation of their reproductive rights and bodily autonomy.
The Danish government announced that these victims will be compensated. This decision comes following a report that revealed this coercive practice in the autonomous region of Greenland, which is a territory belonging to the Kingdom of Denmark.
The compensation represents an acknowledgment by the Danish authorities that what happened constitutes a violation of the fundamental rights of these women, who were subjected to medical procedures without their informed consent.
