Automotive sector concentrates majority of credit intermediaries in Portugal

The granting of consumer financing in Portugal maintains a structural link to vehicle acquisition. According to data from the Bank of Portugal for the end of 2025, seven out of every ten ancillary credit intermediaries operate from car dealerships and workshops, belonging to the automotive sector. The market had 4,835 active operators, of which 88% are companies and 76.5% operate as ancillary credit intermediaries.

Among legal entities holding this type of license, 61% are engaged in the retail sale of motor vehicles, motorcycles and related components, to which can be added 9% with other activities linked to the automotive sector. The remaining licenses are distributed across other retail trade sectors, with 19%, and the health sector, with 7%. Furthermore, 56% of all intermediaries declared the provision of financial services associated with credit intermediation as a secondary activity.

Between 2021 and 2025, more than 80% of the total amount of automotive credit in Portugal was contracted through intermediaries, which highlights the decisive role of these agents at the moment of purchasing cars. In personal credit, on the contrary, intermediation represented only about 20% of the financing granted in the same period.

The data comes from the article "Credit intermediaries in consumer credit," authored by economists Renata Mesquita, Joaquim Rodrigues and Carla Soares, published in the June 2026 Economic Bulletin of the Bank of Portugal. The study also reveals that, while the reliance on intermediaries in automotive credit showed a slight decline over the period analyzed, in personal credit there was a trajectory of consistent growth in new contracting.
