The Government's (Million-Dollar) WhatsApp Is Born, Grows, and Dies Without Users

Notícias de Coimbra28 August 2026 at 09:27

Over 600 thousand euros were invested by the State in a messaging application created for Government members and staff. The application, called "Government WhatsApp," was developed with the aim of facilitating internal communication between executive members and staff, but ultimately failed to attract users.

Since its launch, the application has not managed to reach a significant number of users. Data indicates that the number of people who actually used the platform was practically non-existent, making it a failure in terms of adoption.

The investment of over 600 thousand euros raised questions about the effectiveness of public spending on technology projects. Critics point out that the funds could have been used more efficiently, considering that existing free messaging tools could have fulfilled the same function.
