Meta will impose new restrictions on teenage users on its Instagram and Facebook platforms. The company announced it will block access for minors at midnight and limit daily use to two hours. These measures are part of an $18 billion (15.4 billion euros) agreement reached with 48 U.S. states.
The agreement comes amid widespread concerns about the effects of social media on young people's mental health. Several states have been suing Meta, accusing the company of not adequately protecting minors on its platforms.
The new rules will require teenagers to verify their age before creating an account and will impose automatic screen time limits. Parents will also have more tools to monitor and control their children's activity on the platforms.
This agreement is one of the largest ever reached with a technology company in the United States. Meta acknowledged some of the concerns raised by regulators, although the company did not admit any illegal conduct under the agreement.
