Middle East: Israeli army invades Syria and fires projectiles 50 km from the capital

The Israeli army again invaded Syrian territory, advancing through the Quneitra province with a convoy of six vehicles from the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) that departed from a base in the mountainous area of Tel al-Ahmar. The troops advanced to the village of Bariqa, located about 30 kilometers to the south, and fired two projectiles that fell between Tel al-Ahmar and the town of Beit Yinn, in a rural area south of Damascus, approximately 50 kilometers from the Syrian capital. The information was confirmed by the Syrian state broadcaster SANA, which located the attack on Tal Bat al-Warda hill, on the slopes of Mount Hermon, currently under Israeli control since the fall of former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. The projectiles hit agricultural land without causing injuries.

On Tuesday, Syria called on the international community to take measures for Israel to cease its repeated violations in the country, where it maintains military positions since the fall of al-Assad at the end of 2024. The Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned the visit of the Israeli Defense Minister, Israel Katz, to southern Lebanon, considering the crossing of Syria's international borders as a violation of the country's sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Israel Katz's visit occurred days after the Israeli army commander, Eyal Zamir, also traveled to the region, and a week after the Israeli bombardment of the Abu Duhur air base in northwestern Syria. Israel claims that a Turkish delegation was present at that base and that the attack was intended to send a warning about Ankara's military reinforcement in Syria, although Turkey has denied any presence at the site.

Israel launched hundreds of airstrikes during the operations of a rebel coalition that overthrew Bashar al-Assad in December 2024, targeting targets belonging to the regular forces affiliated with the Syrian regime. At the same time, it stationed troops in southern Syria, in a buffer zone under UN supervision near the Golan Heights, occupied by Israel since 1967.
