A tanker ship paid the record amount of $5.3 million to cross the Panama Canal during a drought caused by the El Niño climate phenomenon. The high value reflects the adverse navigation conditions faced during the water shortage period.

The Panama Canal, built by the United States, has the United States, China, Japan, Chile, and South Korea as its main users. These countries depend on the waterway for the transport of goods between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans.

The drought associated with El Niño significantly reduced water levels in the lakes that feed the canal's lock system, limiting navigation capacity and forcing the adoption of restrictions on vessel traffic.
