Astronauts and cosmonauts face significant difficulties defecating in space, a problem involving factors such as zero gravity, dehydrated food, and gastrointestinal problems. A new study may have discovered the reason behind these difficulties.
The investigation analyzed longitudinal metabolomic profiles from astronauts and cosmonauts, revealing an increase in intestinal microbial protein fermentation during spaceflights.
Fifty-two blood samples from astronauts and cosmonauts were analyzed during and after missions aboard the International Space Station. The method used was liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry, with 40 of these analyses being performed.
