A US federal judge declared on Thursday illegal the sanctions imposed in February by Donald Trump's administration on Anthropic, considering them retaliation for the artificial intelligence company's criticism of the Pentagon. The decision prohibits the federal agencies cited in the lawsuit from executing the government's order to discontinue the use of Anthropic's tools, the creator of the Claude chatbot.
Judge Rita Lin stated in her 59-page decision that "the empty invocation of national security is not a blank check to punish and retaliate against government critics." The court also overturned the company's designation as a "supply chain risk," as analyzed by AFP.
