About 1,500 people remain missing after floods hit the Himalayan region on Wednesday. Among the missing are hundreds of pilgrims who were traveling toward Mount Kailash, one of the most sacred mountains for Hindus, Buddhists, Jains, and followers of the Tibetan Bon tradition.

To reach the destination, thousands of devotees face every year a journey of approximately 52 kilometers. The pilgrimage includes a passage at 5,630 meters of altitude, where the amount of oxygen available is about half of that found under normal conditions at sea level.
