The National Congress installed on Friday a joint committee to analyze the provisional measure that ends the so-called "blusinhas tax," the 20% charge on international purchases of up to US$ 50. The session to define the presidency and rapporteurship of the committee was moved up and was initially only scheduled for next week.

The committee had already been installed at the beginning of August, but without the definition of the main positions, which kept the MP stalled and at risk. With the anticipation of the meeting, it was finally possible to define who will occupy the leadership positions of the committee.

According to the agreement closed between the leaders, the presidency will be held by Deputy Reginaldo Lopes (PT-MG) and the rapporteurship by Senator Leila Barros (PDT-DF), both allies of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. The proposal to end the tax is considered an electoral asset by the president, who is a candidate for re-election.

US tribunal declares Trump government sanctions against Anthropic illegal: 'Empty invocation'

A US federal judge declared illegal the sanctions imposed by the Trump administration on Anthropic in February, considering them retaliation for the artificial intelligence company's criticism of the Pentagon. The 59-page decision by Judge Rita Lin prohibits federal agencies from executing the government's order to discontinue the use of Anthropic's tools, the creator of the Claude chatbot, and overturns the company's designation as a "risk to the national supply chain." The magistrate stated that "the empty invocation of national security is not a blank check to punish and retaliate against government critics."

A Divided Iceland Resumes EU Accession Debate 13 Years Later

The debate over Iceland's accession to the European Union has returned to the country more than a decade later, with thousands of voters deciding on Saturday through a referendum whether they support the social democratic government of Kristrún Frostadóttir in resuming negotiations with Brussels or whether they want to keep this small Nordic nation outside European institutions. The current economic and geopolitical scenario is very different from that of 2013, when the conservative government at the time shelved the issue, but the debate continues to generate significant divisions in Icelandic society.

From Ukraine to Iceland: European enlargement policy as a security guarantee
