Beaches prohibited for swimming

Defesa de Espinho27 August 2026 at 22:23

Several beaches in the municipality of Espinho are closed due to microbiological contamination in the water, leading to red flags being raised and increased alerts to swimmers and surfers. The closure covers the beaches of Rua 37, Frente Azul Sul, Frente Azul Centro and Seca, including associated bathing zones such as Marbelo, Pop Norte and Marbelo Pop Sul.

The Espinho Municipal Council revealed it is monitoring the situation "permanently" and admitted that the problem may be related to the worsening weather conditions this week and the opening of the fuse dike at Barrinha de Esmoriz/Lagoa de Paramos.

The municipality considers urgent an intervention for dredging and maintenance of the lagoon, as well as increased surveillance of river and stream beds in the municipality. An investment in cleaning these watercourses was also announced in coordination with the APA.
