Several beaches in the municipality of Espinho have been closed to swimming due to microbiological contamination in the water, leading to the raising of red flags and increased warnings to swimmers and surfers. The closure covers beaches such as Rua 37, Frente Azul Sul, Frente Azul Centro and Seca, including areas like Marbelo and Pop Norte. The Espinho City Council is monitoring the situation "on a permanent basis" and acknowledges that the problem may be related to the weather conditions of the week and the opening of the fuse dike at Barrinha de Esmoriz/Lagoa de Paramos. The municipality considers a dredging intervention and maintenance of the lagoon urgent, as well as increased surveillance of rivers and streams, announcing an investment in cleaning these watercourses in coordination with APA.
