Malaria outbreak at German airport that killed two employees may have arisen from a 'traveling mosquito'
extra27 August 2026 at 17:08
Two employees of Frankfurt Airport in Germany died from malaria in an outbreak that infected six workers at the terminal. Health authorities are investigating the suspicion that the infection occurred through an infected mosquito that arrived on a flight from an endemic region of the disease. Fraport, the airport operator, confirmed the deaths and stated that the other five infected individuals remain under medical treatment. As a preventive measure, the airport installed mosquito traps and sent the captured insects to specialized laboratories to identify the species and trace the origin of the outbreak.
