Images show the moment when a flash flood, caused by a glacier collapse, hit the border region between Nepal and Tibet, destroying villages, bridges and structures as people fled to save their lives. The disaster killed at least 350 people and left more than a thousand missing. Scientists point out that glacier melting, intensified by human-caused climate change, is behind the tragedy. Initial analyses based on seismic data, satellite images and videos indicate that a large section of a glacier broke off and collapsed, generating seismic waves equivalent to an earthquake.
The commander of the Loures Firefighters, Ricardo Correia, warned on SIC news about the enormous difficulties faced by rescue workers in Nepal, a country with deficient infrastructure and limited means to respond to the scale of the tragedy. Correia highlighted the lack of adequate equipment, access routes destroyed by floods and the instability of the terrain as the main obstacles, advocating for the need for specialized international aid to address these gaps.
