Renan Santos advocates for building maximum security prisons following El Salvador's model

Presidential candidate for Missão, Renan Santos, defended in a debate on CBN, O Globo and Valor the construction of maximum security prisons following models from El Salvador and the United States, with high control to try to prevent the spread of criminal gangs. He intends to build ten prisons with capacity for 30 to 40 thousand people each, with a total investment of R$ 6 billion, which, according to him, would be lower than current prison construction costs. The candidate also cited as a model a prison in Ecuador with "much lower costs," arguing that current infrastructure is precarious and favors trafficking control, while the new prisons would have stricter isolation than existing "lockups."
