The Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) revoked the title of Doctor Honoris Causa granted to Portuguese dictator António de Oliveira Salazar (1889-1970), who governed Portugal authoritarianly for 36 years. The decision was made by the University's Council two weeks after the revocation of the same honorary title from Lincoln Gordon, the American ambassador who allegedly conspired in favor of the 1964 Military Coup in Brazil.
