TRE-RJ decides whether Garotinho can be a candidate and evaluates complaint against Crivella

The Regional Electoral Court of Rio de Janeiro (TRE-RJ) judged this Thursday (27) two important cases related to Republicanos candidates for the 2026 elections. Former governor Anthony Garotinho had his eligibility analyzed amid two lawsuits: one about an alleged scheme for illegal fundraising for electoral campaigns and another about his possible ineligibility, with three requests for disqualification of his candidacy filed by the Electoral Public Ministry, PSD and Novo Party, all related to a conviction for administrative impropriety. The court also evaluated a corruption complaint against former mayor Marcelo Crivella. The central question in Garotinho's cases is when the eight-year period of ineligibility provided by the Clean Record Law begins to be counted.
