Alleged mastermind of the September 11 attacks will stand trial in 2028

The trial of Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, accused of being the mastermind behind the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, was scheduled for June 2028 by a U.S. Air Force judge. The case involves three other defendants, all held at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, totaling more than 25 years between the attacks and the start of the trial. Prosecutors had requested a start date of 2027, but the judge deemed the timeline insufficient to resolve pending issues, such as disputes over evidence to be presented. Previously, Mohammed had reached a plea agreement to avoid a trial that would result in the death penalty.
