Yayoi Kusama, the iconic Japanese artist known worldwide for her installations with colorful polka dots and dot patterns, has died at age 97. Born in Matsumoto in 1929, Kusama became one of the most influential artists of the 20th and 21st centuries, with works exhibited at major international museums such as the MoMA in New York and the Tate Modern in London. Her career spanned painting, sculpture, performance, and immersive installations, and she frequently incorporated her experiences with hallucinations and mental health issues into her work. Kusama voluntarily lived in a psychiatric hospital in Tokyo for decades, continuing to work prolifically until an advanced age.
