The presidential candidate for Missão, Renan Santos, defended in a Glob interview that Brazil develop nuclear weapons as a way to guarantee sovereignty and international projection. He stated that the world's most powerful nations possess this type of weaponry and cited North Korea as an example, saying that according to him, it has more international respect than Venezuela for having developed the atomic bomb. Renan said he sees no problem in straining relations with countries like the United States to fulfill this promise, and added that he doesn't need scientific studies to defend the idea, arguing that reality shows that nations with nuclear weapons are more respected.
