Studies published in 2025 by the Sichuan Geological Environment Survey Research Center and the Sichuan Research Center for Geological Disaster Prevention and Control identified high risk of landslides on National Highway G216, in the Gyirong border checkpoint area, between Tibet and Nepal — the same area hit by a mud avalanche on Wednesday morning. The research, titled "Development characteristics and influencing factors of landslides on National Highway G216, at the Resuo border checkpoint in Gyirong, Tibet," pointed out that the region frequently suffers from large-scale, high-impact landslides, located in elevated areas that are difficult to access.
