Els Estanys, the great natural treasure of Almenara

El Periódico Mediterráneo - General30 August 2026 at 05:01

At the southern tip of the province of Castellón, between the first slopes of the Serra d'Espadà and the Mediterranean Sea, lies Almenara, a town that preserves one of the wetlands of greatest natural value along the entire Valencian coast: the Marjal d'Almenara.

Within this wetland area lies Els Estanys, a set of three freshwater lagoons that constitute the great natural treasure of this region. These lagoons are fed by groundwater from the mountain range, which emerges to the surface through natural springs.

The result is a unique landscape characterized by the combination of water, vegetation and fauna, elements that together build one of the main natural attractions of this Mediterranean wetland.

Els Estanys thus represents an ecosystem of great ecological importance in the context of the Valencian coastline, where the presence of freshwater in direct contact with the Mediterranean environment creates unique conditions for biodiversity.

After all, are we all "putting" the verb "pôr" aside?

Linguist Marco Neves explores the linguistic phenomenon by which the verb "meter" has been progressively replacing the verb "pôr" in the Portuguese language, in a cycle of euphemisms similar to what led the word "cego" to be replaced by "invisual". The article analyzes how these changes reflect a tendency towards softening language and establishes interesting parallels between Portuguese and other linguistic varieties, including Mirandese and Brazilian Portuguese, demonstrating that these lexical transformations are a natural part of language evolution.

Interim president of Venezuela 'rebukes' Trump and says country will maintain control of its oil after agreement

Venezuela's interim president, Delcy Rodríguez, responded on Saturday to statements by U.S. President Donald Trump, affirming that her country will maintain control and sovereignty over its oil reserves, contradicting Trump's claim that the U.S. had secured "majority control" over Venezuela's more than 65 billion barrels in reserves. According to Rodríguez, the agreement signed with the U.S. aims to attract around $100 billion in private investment from American companies to revitalize Venezuela's oil industry, turning underground resources into a source of economic and social well-being for the Venezuelan people.
